Tilted

I wish these dreams were solid.
The answers would lie before me,
easy questions,
easy as counting matchsticks
in the dark. Setting them ablaze
would warm me, the orange flicker
cupped gently in my hands.
I can feel them try, tilting and unstable,
untouchable between this uncertainty
and real. They do not come from logic
but from another place, carved
out of starlight, sparkling and blue.
Eventually they will fade into nothing.
The left-brained wolf dismisses them,
fears the solitude, the emptiness in the wind.

Bittersweet

This morning
in the rain-streaked golden light
a butterfly was dancing,
wing-tips spilling sunlight
into the citrus sting of bitter-sweet
rippling along the jet stream.
Did it sense the fragrance
still wafting from the open greenhouse
door, that heady scent of leaf and fruit?
The swallows have left already,
waved farewell to summer’s short sojourn,
swooping to the edge of day, the wind
rising now at dawn. But what is left is this:
nights of stars, an orange glow,
the slow drift of firewood smoke –
and the music playing inside of us,
fierce enough to fade, stir again.

This Story

I could tell you that there in the dark
where the hills protrude from the black –
nobody is about, just the distant bark
of a fox, a few night birds calling,
sharp starlight bathing the treetops.
But that wouldn’t be true; the ground
is saturated with blood, with the stink
of dogma, bullets and guns.
I wonder if you would listen then,
when I tell you of unspeakable things –
of pain, the rip and tear of innocent flesh.
I have no say, just this poem,
needles of frost in my hair, this story.

Any day now the guns will start firing over the counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire, killing 70% (so they say) of the badger population in an unscientific and unpopular cull ..if you disagree with this then please take a moment to sign the petition http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/38257 Thank you!
